When a classic 1978 Ford Bronco Ranger XLT rolled into NFI Empire’s shop, it marked the beginning of an ambitious 60-day restoration project. Following the incredible success of last year’s 1932 Ford Roadster auction, which helped fund groundbreaking pediatric heart transplant research through The Brett Boyer Foundation, this “dent-side” Bronco is set to continue that legacy of turning classic car restorations into life-saving medical innovations.

This page highlights every aspect of the restoration process, showcasing the meticulous attention to detail and collaboration with industry-leading vendors that went into reviving this Bronco. Whether you’re a fan of classic Ford Broncos or curious about the restoration process, here’s a deep dive into this incredible build.

The Heart of the Beast: Powertrain & Performance

Close-up of a 7.3L Godzilla engine being worked on in a garage, showcasing the meticulous craftsmanship behind restomod builds at NFI Empire.

At the core of this restoration is Ford Performance’s mighty 7.3L Godzilla Big Block Engine, a powerplant that lives up to its namesake. Just as this engine represents the heart of the vehicle, this build represents heart in its purest form – both in its mechanical excellence and its greater purpose of supporting congenital heart defect (CHD) research through the Brett Boyer Foundation.

The engine build features several unique components, including:

  • A one-of-one polished aluminum high-rise intake manifold by Danbury Competition Engines

  • Ford Performance 89MM Bullet Mustang throttle body

  • Custom Indy Power Products billet coil and valve covers

  • Performance fuel rails for optimal fuel delivery

  • Stainless Works air intake system with K&N filtration

A custom 3-inch Stainless Works dual exhaust system was designed specifically for this build, delivering the perfect balance of performance and sound character that a classic Ford Bronco deserves.

Suspension & Chassis: Modern Capability Meets Classic Style

The classic Ford Bronco’s legendary off-road capability reaches new heights with this carefully engineered suspension system. At the core of the upgrade is BDS Suspension’s premium 4-inch lift kit, specifically designed to provide optimal articulation and stability. Paired with Fox Performance shocks and stabilizers, this setup delivers the perfect balance of on-road comfort and off-road performance that vintage Bronco enthusiasts demand. The combination of modern suspension technology with the Bronco’s classic platform creates a driving experience that honors the vehicle’s heritage while incorporating contemporary handling characteristics.

  • BDS 4-inch suspension system

Interior: Contemporary Comfort in a Classic Cabin

The interior restoration of this 1978 Ford Bronco seamlessly bridges the gap between vintage charm and modern luxury, a hallmark of premium classic Bronco builds. NFI Empire’s master craftsman has created a bespoke cabin environment, hand-stitching each interior panel with meticulous attention to detail while preserving the iconic Bronco design language. The integration of modern technology, including the Dakota Digital gauge cluster and RetroSound audio system, transforms this classic Ford Bronco’s cabin into a sophisticated command center without compromising its authentic character.

Climate control, often an afterthought in classic car restorations, received special attention in this build. The Vintage Air air conditioning system has been seamlessly integrated into the dashboard, maintaining the period-correct appearance while providing modern climate control capability. This attention to detail, combined with comprehensive sound deadening and thermal insulation from Second Skin Audio, ensures a quiet, comfortable riding experience that rivals modern luxury SUVs – a far cry from the utilitarian interiors these vehicles left the factory with in 1978.
